Cellar for 20 years or more. Decant for at least 1 hour before serving. Scents of blackcurrant, cherry, balsamic and Mediterranean greenery emerge from the nose of this top-notch Tuscan wine. It comes from the young yet prestigious region of Bolgheri, which lies between the foothills of the Colline Metallifere and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate of Grattamacco is a pioneer in the region of Bolgheri. It was founded in 1977 and was the first winery to plant Vermentino in the region’s windswept hills. However, the estate is more famous for its bold reds, which consistently test the limits of how incredible Tuscan wine can be. Since 2016, Grattamacco has been part of the ColleMassari group, along with other esteemed Tuscan names, such as Tenuta San Giorgio. This Bolgheri Superiore was created in the Super Tuscan style: it is a dry red blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. It envelopes the tongue in sweet, tightly-packed tannins, remarkable acidity and bold fruit flavours. Look for hints of ripe plum and bloody iron, along with classic secondary notes of liquorice and green herbs. The finish is long and laden with minerality. Pair this wine with wild game, aged cheese and meaty stews.
