Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant but best to open it half an hour before service. The Fakin winery is located in Croatia on the Istrian peninsula and covers 30 hectares which includes various micro-locations. Here, the hilly configuration and the proximity of the Mediterranean influence the microclimate ensuring great freshness in the grapes, while the soil gives the wines excellent minerality. These conditions, particularly favorable to viticulture, allow the company to produce very expressive wines based on native grapes such as Malvasia Istarska, Teran, and Muskat. Teran is the most important red grape variety in the area and is characterized aby a marked acid backbone and firm tannins that allow it to age elegantly. The grapes are harvested manually from vineyards with an average age of 30 years. After a 21-day maceration, and fermentation, the finished wine is aged for 8 months in steel. Awarded a score of 95 at the Decanter World Wine Awards, Fakin Teran displays a ruby red color and a lively fruity character. The aromas of raspberry and red currant mix with floral notes of rose hips and violets and with smoky hints. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with round tannins and a fresh acid vein. The smoky notes return on the finish. It is a wine ready to be appreciated now, but which can remain in the cellar for a few years. Try it with pork tenderloin with porcini mushrooms, or polenta with venison.
